Why Can Two Versions of the Same Car Cost Different Amounts to Insure?

Because the badge on the boot is not the whole car. Engine, power, trim, gearbox, security equipment and repair equipment level can differ even when two cars look almost identical.

The version matters

A small-engine entry model and a higher-powered version may share the same body but present different claim costs. Larger wheels, complex lights, cameras and trim-specific body parts can also make repair bills different.

Do not quote the wrong version

Used-car adverts sometimes describe trim levels loosely. Check the registration and exact model details when obtaining a quotation. A price based on a different version is not a reliable guide.

A useful comparison

When deciding between two trims, compare buying price, insurance price and tyre size and likely replacement cost together. The flashier version may cost more in several places at once.

If two versions are on your shortlist, check each one separately registration separately; the difference can be more important than the badge suggests.
